Building A Legacy: What Will You Leave Behind?
Legacy is more than what we leave behind — it is what we build within others.
Legacy is defined as an inheritance passed down from one generation to the next. While inheritance is something we leave to people, legacy is something we leave in people.
In 1 Kings 2:1-10, David’s final moments were not focused on his accomplishments, his wealth, or the kingdom he built. Instead, he focused on preparing his son Solomon for the responsibility ahead.
David understood a powerful truth:
A good father doesn’t just prepare an inheritance for his children; he prepares his children for their inheritance.
His greatest legacy was not the throne he left behind — it was the faith, wisdom, and leadership he deposited into the next generation.
Living By God’s Northstar
Every life needs direction. Just as organizations use guiding principles to stay aligned with their purpose, vision, mission, and values, believers are called to be guided by the truth of God’s Word.
God’s Word will:
Guide you.
Govern you.
Ground you.
David’s instructions to Solomon reveal the foundation for building a lasting legacy.
Be Strong
“Be strong, and show yourself a man.” — 1 Kings 2:2
True strength is not measured by power or position; it is revealed through character.
A strong person stands firm in difficult seasons, takes responsibility, leads with courage, and remains faithful when challenges arise.
Walk In God’s Ways
“Keep the charge of the Lord your God, walking in His ways...” — 1 Kings 2:3
Legacy begins with a life surrendered to God. We cannot lead others well if we are not following God faithfully.
A life aligned with God is a life that leads with wisdom, integrity, and purpose.
Obey God’s Word
“...keeping His statutes, His commandments, His rules, and His testimonies...” — 1 Kings 2:3
Knowing God’s Word is important, but living it is what transforms us. God’s truth shapes our character and gives us a foundation that withstands every season.
Think Generationally
“That the Lord may establish His word...” — 1 Kings 2:4
Legacy-minded people look beyond themselves. They understand that their decisions today impact generations tomorrow.
The question is not just, “What am I building?” but “Who am I building?”
Your Legacy Is Still Being Written
A legacy is the story your life continues to tell after you are no longer here to tell it.
Your faith.
Your choices.
Your obedience.
Your example.
All of these become seeds planted for future generations.
May we build lives that leave behind more than accomplishments. May we leave behind faith, wisdom, courage, and a legacy that points others to God.
Inheritance is what you leave to people. Legacy is what you leave in people.
