I Got That “S” on My Chest: Standing Firm in the Breastplate of Righteousness

As we continue our journey through the Armor of God, we are reminded that spiritual battles require spiritual protection. In Ephesians 6:14, we are instructed to “stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place.”

The breastplate was designed to protect a soldier’s heart and vital organs during battle. In the same way, God has given us the Breastplate of Righteousness to guard our hearts against the attacks of the enemy.

Righteousness means being in right standing with God, living according to His standard, and reflecting His character. This righteousness is not something we earn—it is something we receive through faith in Jesus Christ. Because of what Christ has done for us, we can walk confidently in the identity He has given us.

The enemy often targets the heart because what fills our hearts eventually shapes our lives. But when we guard our hearts and remain rooted in God’s truth, we can stand firm.

Joseph is a powerful example of someone who wore the breastplate of righteousness. When temptation came, Joseph chose obedience over compromise. He lost his cloak, but he did not lose his character. He protected his relationship with God rather than protecting his reputation.

Joseph understood something powerful: it is better to lose a cloak than lose your calling.

The Breastplate of Righteousness protects:

• Your Identity — reminding you that you are a new creation in Christ.

• Your Peace — keeping your heart anchored in God.

• Your Confidence — allowing you to approach God boldly.

• Your Intimacy with God — keeping your relationship with Him strong.

So how do we put on the Breastplate of Righteousness?

✔ Know your identity in Christ.
✔ Guard your heart.
✔ Walk in obedience.
✔ Pursue holiness.
✔ Repent quickly and receive God’s grace.

Your greatest battles are won or lost in your heart before they are ever seen in your life. The enemy cannot steal the righteousness God has given you, but he will try to convince you that you are not worthy to wear it.

Stand firm. Guard your heart. Walk in righteousness.
